I was in a very similar situation. I had become an expert in the oil and gas industry and a lot of the oil and gas companies started using PRA.
I went through some of the trainings that my company had and got some idea of what it does.
There was a lot of boring documentation on SharePoint, but the more I read, the more I got confused.
There was an implementation partner that had all the PRA expertise. Everyone was in project mode and I couldn't ask a lot of questions to learn it.
Even the Trainers didn't know it
I knew I had to master PRA as that would really get my rate up and I could be on longer projects. I had mastered JVA, but didn't know much about PRA.
I tried my trusted old method of Google to learn PRA, but I didn't find a lot of info on it.
I found a few places that were offering PRA training, so I decided to go for it.
The first hit on Google was asking for 3000 dollars!!
That was going to be a lot so I decided to go for the cheapest option where someone from India was teaching PRA.
I got on a few Skype calls and realized that the guy who was teaching me had probably never worked on PRA.
It was the weirdest training that I had ever been to where I would ask a question and the instructor would basically go through the PRA menu path and read what was written there :)
I decided it was a waste of time to continue with him even though I had already paid him.
Training with the 'Guru'
I reached out to the number 1 hit on Google and their website seemed credible so I decided that I would pay him the huge amount as it would pay off if I could get on the PRA project.
I reached out to them and they wanted me to get more students for it to be worth their time. For the next few days, I kept begging my coworkers to take the class with me.
I was able to convince 2 of them to take the demo class and it was pretty good. One of my coworkers decided to sign up for the class and we were going to start our PRA training the next week.
Frustration of learning PRA
I started off the class and it gave me a good overview. I was happy that I could finally master PRA and add this to my skillset to get longer projects or a better rate.
From the second class onwards, I asked the instructor to show me practical examples of the theory he was teaching.
To my utter disappointment, this 'expert' couldn't show me a lot of examples on the system. If I got an error, I was just stuck there by myself without any help. He would go through postings and master data that was already in the system as he didn't know how to create the data and work through the errors.
The class was still beneficial as I gained something from out, so I decided to continue.
After the class I would sit for hours trying to reverse engineer, Debug and figure out the business process by reading documents.
It was a very frustrating process.
Through months of hard work, I was able to get past a lot of errors. My understanding of PRA was better, but I was no where close to becoming an expert.
Learning at my client
I moved on to a new client and they were implementing PRA. I begged my boss to put me on the project and I convinced her that I could pick it up and manage it.
Since she was really impressed with all my other skills, she decided to give it a try.
I kept reading the documents that our implementation partner had written and practiced in the sandbox for months.
I would get stuck and frustrated with all the errors despite months of hard work.
PRA was hard to learn... I needed a good teacher.
I kept asking around and finally one of the senior consultants from our implementation partner decided to help me.
I would practice everyday for hours and then have a meeting with him and get my questions answered.
He was really good! ( He better be, my client was paying him $300/hr)
Over the next few months, I started getting more and more comfortable with PRA
After working on it over the next year or so, I was able to finally say that I had mastered it!
Becoming the PRA lead
I was now the PRA lead at a new client. Apart from solving complex issues, I had to train new members on our team who wanted to learn PRA
Since I had spent years in learning PRA, I knew the difficulties in learning it. I also knew how I should be teaching it to someone new.

Because of the way training is structured, you never lose interest in going through one video after another. As I mentioned earlier, the training is very detailed and covers each topic with to the point hands-on video and at the same time walks you through the concept in detail. I have attended SAP FICO, PRA and JVA courses; and I was able to use my leanings at my work from day 1 as I went through the training videos one by one. Unfortunately, I was not recommended by anyone when I signed up for these courses on SAP Sharks and found them after going through several training sites on Google.
